After a Dramatic Failure, How a Major U.S. Utility Company Succeeded in Migrating to Oracle Primavera

An American power and natural gas holding company headquartered in the Carolinas has been aggressively growing for the past twenty years, acquiring and merging with market leaders to deliver coal, hydroelectric, oil and gas, solar, wind, and nuclear power-generation to the southeast.

With this critical growth, the company needed to update their scheduling program to Oracle’s Primavera P6 enterprise project portfolio management software. But to do so, the utility company was required to have all of their previous scheduling data populated into the new Oracle environment. Unfortunately, converting and integrating such disparate systems and technologies was hugely challenging—so challenging, in fact, that not one but two respected prime contractors were recruited to migrate the data to Primavera P6 EPPM.

After several years and massive budget overruns, those two contractors could not successfully migrate the data—resulting in tens of millions of dollars and many jobs lost.
